Eldest son of Queen Victoria (born 1841) who reigned as King of England from 1901 until his death in 1910. ALS signed “Edward R & I,” three pages on two adjoining sheets, 6.5 x 9.5, his personal color-monogrammed Balmoral Castle letterhead, October 5, 1905. Edward writes to the Khedive of Egypt, which was then under British control. In full: “Many thanks for your kind letter from Constantinople. It gave the Queen & myself especial pleasure to receive you as our guest at Windsor Castle on the occasion of the marriage of our niece with the young Prince of Sweden. As their engagement took place in Egypt & under your auspices there was all the more reason that you should be present at their wedding. We sincerely hope that your visits to England may be as frequent as possible & it will always give us the greatest pleasure to see you. Trusting that you have benefitted from your ‘cure’ & thoroughly enjoyed your stay in the different countries you have visited & from all wishing your interesting country continued prosperity!” The wedding in question, held on June 15, 1905, was that of the future King Gustaf VI Adolf of Sweden (1882–1973) and Princess Margaret of Connaught (1882–1920), a daughter of Edward’s brother Prince Arthur, Duke of Connaught. (Margaret died of complications following an operation, eight months pregnant with her sixth child, before Gustav ascended to the Swedish throne in 1950).
