Edward S. Stokes Autograph Letter. Two pages, 4.5" x 7", on personal letterhead, New York, April 19, 1885, to Robert Bonnier of the New York Ledger. Edward Stokes is best remembered for murdering James Fisk, his business partner and romantic rival. Both men vied for the attention of New York showgirl Josie Mansfield but the showgirl favored Stokes. She and Stokes tried to extort money from Fisk but everything ended in tragedy as Stokes shot and killed Fisk on January 6, 1872. Spending but four years in prison Stokes returned to New York and obviously had enough time on his hands to write the present letter and complain to the newspapers about not having enough room in the city to exercise his horse. Ex.
