Edward S Curtis: The North American Indian Vol 9
Edward S. Curtis: The North American Indian, Volume Nine (Norwood, Mass.: The Plimpton Press, 1913), limited edition on Holland Van Gelder Zonen paper, 200 pages, 75 plates with tissue guards, re-bound in brown library binding with gilt lettering, folio (9.25” x 12.5”). This is the ninth in the 20-volume set The North American Indian documenting β€œThe Indians of the United States, the Dominion of Canada, and Alaska,” which J. P. Morgan commissioned from photographer Edward Curtis (1868-1952) in 1906. Morgan paid Curtis $75,000 to produce the set, to include 1,500 photographs and extensive information on the traditions of the Native American tribes before their way of life disappeared. In return, Curtis provided Morgan with 25 copies of the set and 500 original prints. During his visits with 80 different tribes, Curtis shot 40,000 images, recorded 10,000 wax cylinders of traditional languages and music, and wrote hundreds of biographical sketches. This volume contains 75 images and text on the Salishan, Chimakum, Quilliute and Willapa tribes of the Pacific Northwest. During the production of this volume, J. P. Morgan died at the age of 75, prompting Curtis to include a tribute to his patron, written on April 16, 1913. This beautiful, rare book is in fine condition, with a minor scuff on the back cover; the excellent paper has no discernible defects.

Shipping: Books & Catalogs (view shipping information)
