Edward S Curtis: Lot 35 Volume Photogravures
Edward S. Curtis Collection of 35 Volume Photogravures from The North American Indian. The majority of this group is on the rarer Japanese Rice Tissue paper. Curtis visited approximately 80 Indian tribes from 1890 to 1930, taking more than 40,000 photographs of the people in their native settings and documented their history, lifestyles, and customs. In 1906, J. P. Morgan offered Curtis $75,000 to produce a series of 20 volumes on the North American Indian. The resulting masterwork is incredibly important to researchers and historians as the information was gathered at a time just before most of these tribes' important traditions were forever forgotten. Plates from the Curtis volumes are very popular and here is an opportunity for a collector, dealer, or institution to add a nice group to their holdings. Most image sizes are roughly 6" x 8" and the page sizes are 9.5" x 12". Conditions are generally excellent; a few exceptions noted below.

A complete list of the photogravures included: "Sísiutl Dancer - Qágyuhl*", "Wife of Wokónda - Oto", "Brush Lodge - Cheyenne", "Baskets, Nunivak" (backing paper foxed), "Síluk, Diomede", "Frame of Osage Arbor", "Súqitaá" (soiling in margin), "Mandan Girl" (uneven aging from tissue guard), "Home Structure, Cape Prince of Wales", "Washo Cradle-Baskets*", "Mono Summer Kitchen" (uneven aging from tissue guard), "Noatak Man" (minor crinkling from mounting), "Ceremonial Ki - Pima", "Síluk, Diomede", "Home Structure, Diomede", "Noatak Home", "Chemehuevi House on Colorado River" (slight staining and crinkling), "Desert Cahuilla Home" (some glue bleedthrough), "Fiesta of San Estevan - Acoma(B)" (some uneven toning), "At Nash Harbor, Nunivak", "Hooper Bay Man" (minor crinkling to lower right corner), "Lame Deer Monuments - Cheyenne*", "Modern Houses at Palm Springs - Cahuilla", "A Buffalo Fall - Piegan", "A Yuma Home", "Line Stretching Posts, Nunivak", "Paviotso House at Walker Lake", "Frame of Osage Harbor", "Lame Deer Monuments - Cheyenne*", "Oto Puberty Lodge" (minor corner crinkling), "Remains of Ancient Fish-Pounds (A)*", "Ancient Shore of Salton Sea*", "Depositing San Estevan in the Booth - Acoma" (dampstain on backing paper not affecting tissue gravure), "Site of a Prehistoric Village - Cahuilla*" (uneven aging from tissue guard), and "A Melon Field".
