Edward Rufus Hill (1851 - 1908) MT. Rainier Oil
This is an original oil painting of Mount Rainier, Washington Territory circa 1879 by artist Edward Rufus Hill (American 1851 - 1908). Edward Rufus Hill was a renowned landscape painter, born in Taunton, Massachusetts in 1851, the son of painter Thomas Hill. Due to his father's health, the family left the East and made the overland journey to San Francisco in 1861. The younger Hill studied painting with his father and often accompanied him on painting trips. He was married and divorced three times, once to artist Levina Baker. His small landscapes of northern California were often done on cigar box tops. Hill was active in California until his death of cancer in Oakland on Feb. 23, 1908, just four months prior to his father's demise. (exh. askArt). The work shows an original oil painting on board of the towering Mount Rainier with a lake in the mid-ground and beautiful landscape tree scene at the shore of the foreground. The work is immensely similar to other documented early works by Rufus. The piece is in an original gold gilt wood detailed frame, of the same 19th Century era. The back is marked, “E.R HILL (1851-1908) MT. RAINIER, WASHINGTON TERRITORY C. 1879”. The work signature is not legible or seen, but was identified over much research by the Sjaardema’s. Provenance: From the Henry and Jean Sjaardema Art Collection. Visible art area measures 23” by 11.5” and the frame is 32.5” by 21”. Art area appears well kept with some signs of restoration. There is a small crack in the board, lower left. The frame shows slight chipping as expected, but overall solid.
