This buckle is a later Wayne family authorized edition made by The Bohlin Company as an exact replica of the original given by Director Howard Hawks to John Wayne following the completion of the acclaimed 1948 United Artists film, "Red River" John Wayne loved his so much that he wore it in countless films for the next thirty years. Members of the staff and the actors each received one of the buckles from Hawks, but only a few remain today. In 1981, John Wayne's son Michael sent the buckle to a silversmith in order to have duplicates made for all of Wayne's children. While in the silversmith's care, it was stolen and has not been seen since. Red River D buckles, made by Wayne family licensed sources, are among the most popular and sought after John Wayne collectibles today.
