English politician, poet, playwright, and prolific novelist. He was immensely popular with the reading public and wrote a stream of best-selling novels which earned him a considerable fortune. Among the phrases he coined: ‘The pen is mightier than the sword’ and the famous opening line, ‘It was a dark and stormy night.’ ALS signed “Lytton,” one page both sides, 4 x 6, June 2, 1870. Letter to an unknown gentleman. In part: “I am extremely obliged by your courteous letter & the very curious & interesting memorial of times & events…on the History of the World.” In very good condition, with scattered toning and soiling, several tape remnants, partial separation along hinge, and mounting remnants to reverse of second integral page. Accompanied by an unsigned carte-de-visite portrait.
