Attorney general in Lincoln’s cabinet during the Civil War (1793–1869). War-dated ALS signed “Edw. Bates,” one page, 5 x 7.75, August 4, 1862. In full: “The writer of the within letter is, I think, a very worthy & competent gentleman. He is a nephew of the talented and unfortunate John M. Botts. I need hardly say that it would be gratifying to me, if you should be able to gratify his request, or to do for him some other equivalent good.” In fine condition, with intersecting folds. Accompanied by an unsigned carte-de-visite portrait.
