Norwegian artist (1863-1944), whose brooding, anguished paintings and graphic works, based on personal grief and obsessions, were instrumental in the development of expressionism. ALS in German, signed “Edv. Munch,” one page, 8.5 x 11, Victoria Hotel letterhead, no date. Letter to Berlin painter Hermann Struck (1876–1944). In part (translated): "Please forgive my answering so late - but you know my great difficulties with writing – and these days I was always traveling between Kristiana, Halsten, and Göteborg, where I've got a large exhibition going.” In very good condition, with intersecting folds, splitting along horizontal fold, and a couple ink spots and pencil notations.

Munch’s status as one of the Norway’s greatest artists is apparent in this letter, as he apologizes for the time commitment involved in commuting around the country as part of a successful exhibition. He drew inspiration from his tragic, impoverished youth—one in which he witnessed the deaths of both his mother and sister, dealt with a severely depressed father, and grappled with his own poor health. His style rapidly evolved from his initial Impressionistic form to more Expressionistic. In fact, Munch played a key role in the development of German Expressionism. His most familiar painting, The Cry, is also a typical example of the artist’s feelings of isolation and fear, not to mention misery, sickness, and death.
