Leader of the Czechoslovak independence movement (1884–1948) who was President of Czechoslovakia at the time of Hitler's incursion. Signed book: My War Memoirs. First English edition. London: George Allen & Unwin, 1928. Hardcover, 6.5 x 9.75, 512 pages. Boldly signed and inscribed on the half-title page in fountain pen, "To Sir Samuel Hoare, this book will remember our collaboration during the great war and the great contribution he himself rendered in our fight for independence. Friendly, Dr. Edvard Benes, Prague, 28.X.1928." In very good to fine condition, with staining and bowing to the covers, and the boards slightly bowed; inner pages are fine. Sir Samuel Hoare, 1st Viscount Templewood, was a British conservative politician with close ties to the Czech government who had served in the British Army during World War I. A marvelous association copy of Benes's wartime memoir.
