Eduardo Chillida (1924-2002)

Eduardo Chillida comes from San Sebastián. At the age of 19 he went to study architecture at the University of Madrid. Afterwards he attended the private art academy ‘Círculo de Bellas Artes’. In 1948, he moved to Paris, where he started working with the medium iron. Three years later, he moved back to his home country Spain and soon established himself to become an internationally renowned sculptor and illustrator. Over the decades he took part in many exhibitions, including the documenta in Kassel. In his works, both sculptures and prints, the artist deals with ideas of space and its limits. In 1958, he was awarded the Grand Prix of sculpture at the Venice Biennale. More awards followed and by the eighties many esteemed museums, such as the Guggenheim in New York, dedicated retrospectives to the Spanish artist. (tm)
