Important 19th century French painter (1832–1883) whose works were a seminal influence on the impressionists of the succeeding generation. ALS in French, signed “Ed. Manet,” one page, 4.25 x 6.5, April 3, no year. An untranslated letter of introduction for a young man to gain admittance to an upcoming Salon. Double-matted with a portrait of Manet to an overall size of 15 x 12. In fine condition, with light uniform toning. ‘Salon’ exhibitions were frequently mounted in France during this period, the most famous of which was the annual Paris Salon, the official art exhibition of the Académie des Beaux-Arts. Manet’s nude entitled ‘Olympia,’ was first exhibited at the Paris Salon in 1865, where it shocked the world due to its frank depiction of a prostitute—today, this is considered a watershed moment in modern artistic history.
