Important 19th century French painter (1832–1883) whose works, including such well-known images as ‘The Luncheon on the Grass’ and ‘Olympia,’ were a seminal influence on the impressionists of the succeeding generation. ALS in French, signed “Ed. Manet,” one page, 3.75 x 6, no date, but postmarked Paris, April 19, 1877. A subtly flirtatious letter to Eva Gonzales, in full (translated): “Are your two pictures finished? You know that if you need me, I am entirely at your disposal.” In fine condition. Accompanied by the original mailing envelope addressed in Manet’s hand. A well-known Impressionist painter herself, Eva Gonzalez was Manet’s one and only formal pupil, and as such enjoyed his focused attention. The two maintained a lively relationship and shared regular correspondence, which have grown increasingly difficult to find. Connecting two important figures of the movement, this is a charming letter from the Impressionist leader to his young pupil.
