Pulitzer Prize-winning American author (1885-1968) of such classics as Show Boat, So Big, and Cimarron. TLS, two pages on two adjoining sheets, 5 x 3.5, 730 Park Avenue letterhead, March 27, 1966. Humorous letter to a family friend, in full: “That short story, dear Mr. Lewis—entitled IF I SHOULD EVER TRAVEL—which you happened to mention at my sister Fan’s apartment a few weeks ago, actually was written by me. It merely happens to be forty-five years old. Still, I shouldn’t have forgotten it completely. It’s one of eight short stories in a volume of my old short stories entitled GIGOLO. As I stood there at the book-shelf, rereading it at a racing pace, I was astounded to realize that it really wasn’t so very dated, even if all those decades had rolled over it, and its author had quite forgotten it. It was almost like encountering a forgotten old schoolgirl friend. Some wrinkles and a little gray here and there, but chic; and she had kept her figure and still made sense.” In fine condition, with tiny pieces of old tape along the edges.
