Statesman and politician (1753–1813) who variously served as aide-de-camp to Washington, member of the Continental Congress, the first Attorney General, and Aaron Burr’s lawyer during his notorious trial for treason. LS signed “Edm. Randolph,” one page, 7.75 x 10, November 24, 1794. Letter to John Miller Russell. In full: “The President of the United States desirous of availing the public of your services as Consul of the United States for the Port of St. Petersburg in Russia, I have now the honor of enclosing the Commission, and of being with sentiments of respect …” Letter is affixed to a slightly larger sheet. Two circular spots of toning from adhesive, and scattered creases and wrinkles, otherwise fine condition. Randolph’s signature is crisp and unaffected by the flaws.
