Considered the greatest Shakespearean actor of his day. He was born in 1789 of uncertain parentage but rose to considerable fame and wealth on the European and American stage. ALS, one page, 7.5 x 9, no date. Letter to scientist Henry Joseph Thomas Drury, who was director of the gymnasium in Harrow, where Kean and Lord Byron went to school. In part, “I am sorry Dear Drury not to have seen you for the moment…I play in Newberry on Friday night, in London on Saturday…I consequently cannot see you.” In very good condition, with several small fold separations, scattered edge wear, pencil notations to top and toning from tape remnants.
