Statesman, author, orator, political theorist, and philosopher (1729-1797) who, after relocating to England, served for many years in the House of Commons. He is mainly remembered for his support of the American Revolution, and for his later opposition to the French Revolution. ALS signed “Edm. Burke,” one page, 8 x 10, no date. Letter to Jacob Bourde. In full: “I am just come to town when I seldom come where my stay is very short. You were so good as to promise last winter that you would make us a visit this summer. If you can go down this evening, you mite [sic] let me know when I may wait on you at your house to take you down with me. If you cannot for the present, I am to let you know that our friend Dr. Morris proposes to make us a visit on Friday…I have been long professing this satisfaction but one unlucky matter or other has always broke in upon it.” Second integral page bears an address panel in Burke’s hand. Partial separations along fragile intersecting folds, several old tape repairs to reverse of both pages, scattered edge tears and chips, several pencil notations, and uniform toning, otherwise very good condition.
