<B>Edmond Hoyle: Signed </B></I><B><I>A Short Treatise on the Game of Whist</B></I></B></I> (London, 1746), sixth edition, 80 pages, brown-leather binding with gold lettering and decorations, 16mo (6.25" x 4"). Card-game authority Edmond Hoyle (1672-1769) began tutoring English high society in the game of whist in 1741. The first edition of this book (of which only two copies are known to exist) was published in 1742. Four years later, this popular tome had gone into its sixth edition, the price of which was lowered to combat the purchase of pirated versions. The verso of the title page includes the signature <I>"Edmond Hoyle"</B></I>.
