Original artwork by Edie Sedgwick, accomplished in mixed media on an 8.25 x 12 sheet of artist paper, signed in the lower right in pencil, “EMS-65.” The work depicts the middle backside of a woman, whose hands, one lightly holding the fingers of the other, cover her bottom. The sheet is affixed to a same-size backing, which is in turn mounted and matted to an overall size of 15.75 x 19.

Sedgwick arrived in NYC in the summer of 1964 and, a year later, she was a star. She lived lavishly, feverishly, befriended Bob Dylan, and joined forces with Andy Warhol. She had become one of NYC’s most sought-after faces, appearing as ‘The Girl with the Black Tights’ in the November issue of Life magazine and being named as a ‘Youthquaker’ in the August issue of Vogue. As this work indicates, Sedgwick, in between her parties and movies and glamour shoots, still found time for her artwork. The colors and subject matter, with the hands held yet hidden, suggest a shyness or insecurity to the work, a stark contrast to Sedgwick’s outward appearance and party-girl behavior.
