Edie Bouvier Beale, the eccentric Long Island shut-in, autograph letter signed, dated 26 September 1978. Penned a year after her mother's death, as she was trying to prevent the derelict manor from being sold. Headed ''September 21st / 'Grey Gardens''', letter is addressed to friend Janet Hoskins and reads in part: ''Dear Janet, Your beautiful handkerchief has arrived and I want to thank you very-very much -- I have a grey dress that I might use it with -- am very excited! A friend of mine told me once about New Hope and I always intended to make a visit -- from the description I do not blame you for finding it fascinating!...'' Signed ''Edie B.'' Includes original envelope. Near fine.
