Spectacular color 15.75 x 11.75 original painting entitled ‘Climbing Cone’ by artist and spaceflight historian Ed Hengeveld. Signed in gold ink, “On top of Cone Crater. Edgar Mitchell. Apollo 14 LMP. Feb. 5, 1971.” In very fine condition. Accompanied by a letter of authenticity from Hengeveld that reads in part: “The painting shows Apollo-14 astronauts Al Shepard and Ed Mitchell on their trek to the rim of Cone Crater on February 6, 1971. This was their second excursion in the Fra Mauro region of the moon, which lasted about four hours and thirty minutes. The painting shows the moment when Shepard, pulling the MET (modularized equipment transporter) behind him, decides they don’t have enough time and have to turn back. The elusive rim is out of view at the left and Mitchell isn’t quite ready to give up yet. When Mitchll [sic] saw this painting he commented, ‘Actually, when I initially objected, they gave us a 30 minute extension and we did continue. Then, our time really ran out, and we had to turn back because of our consumables. I wouldn’t have wanted to run out of those either. It was, however, a dramatic moment, when the nominal time elapsed and I had to argue for more.’”
