American poet, biographer, and dramatist (1868–1950) perhaps best-known as the author of Spoon River Anthology. TLS signed in pencil “E. L. Masters,” one page, 8.5 x 10.5, personal letterhead, April 25, 1928. Masters rejects a request to reprint an article. In full [with spelling intact]: “Your letter to the Interanational Publishing Comanpy of April 6th, asking fro leave to use in a book of readings for colleges an article of mine entitled And So I Threw Away $20,000 A Year, has been turned over to me for my consent so to use it. In the form in which it was published I do not wish it to go in any book, and I have not the time now to put the manuscript together again as I wrote it. It belongs to autobiogarphical matter to be put soemtime in a book of my own when I can properly revise it. I cannot give you the requested permission to put it in your book.” Blocks of irregular toning, a small hole in his embossed name, a few small edge tears, and a paperclip impression at the top of the page, otherwise very good condition. Accompanied by a copy of the letter to which he refers.
