Important French painter and sculptor (1834–1917), one of the seminal figures of Impressionism, best known for his images of dancers. ALS in French, signed “Degas,” one page, 4.75 x 7.5, no date. Degas sends his apologies to a lady. Translated in part: “I think, Madam, your letter this morning (I did not go to the studio here), come today or tomorrow as it pleases you. I can not help being touched by your kind obstinacy, and to you, madam, all my compliments.” In fine condition, with two punch holes to top edge, mild toning, and some light mirroring of ink from folding.

Intended for Winnaretta Singer, the daughter of sewing machine magnate Isaac Singer and a woman who stood at the center of European art patronage, Degas does his best to convey his sense of gratitude over his benefactor’s persistence in trying to contact him. His desire to stay in her good graces was with good reason, as Singer offered a continuous stream of funding and financial support for artists like Degas. A revealing note, displaying the painter’s humble side. Pre-certified John Reznikoff/PSA/DNA and RRAuction COA.
