Burlington Bertie Antiques is offering for your consideration this stunning French, early nineteenth-century, ebonized crucifix. Truly a magnificent work of art, this crucifix is a masterpiece with its hand-turned supports and plinth and its intricately sculpted spelter figure of Jesus Christ.

<BR><BR>

The top and sides of the cross are capped in delicate white porcelain cabochons. Below the silver-tone figure of Jesus, is an inlaid skull?symbolic of Golgotha, ?the place of the skull? or Calvary, the hill upon which Christ was crucified.

This beautiful crucifix shows normal signs of wear commensurate to its age of over 150 years. The base, just above its three bun feet, shows wear from over a century of handling and there's a bit of wear to the ebonizing at the tip from being picked up by the second to last turning just below the top porcelain bead.

Truly an important find, this crucifix carries with it over a century and a half of faith and tradition?a history that would be welcome in any home.
