Famed American artist (1824–1906) who earned the moniker the 'American Rembrandt' for his skillful portraits and genre scenes. ALS, one page both sides, 4.25 x 7, May 1, 1900. Letter to Hopkinson Smith, in part: "I have your kind invitation for Monday, May 7th—I am in such a miserable state now, not even getting up to my studio every day; not an atom of appetite or physical force and not knowing when I am to land, that I do not feel that I have any right to accept an invitation to such a cheerful entertainment as your note implies you have in hand." In fine condition, with two small file holes to the left edge.
