The lot features two late-19th to early-20th Century ball head war clubs from the Eastern Woodlands Native American Indians. The first example shows a hand-carved solid hardwood root burl ball head with old black and green mineral pigment paint, a natural walnut stain and old brass trade tacks (the piece measures overall 16 inches in length). The second example is made of a softer solid wood that is hand-carved from a tree root burl for the ball head and also shows a black and green mineral pigment paint and brass trade tacks. Both clubs exhibit a nice patina and signs of use and age with some splits and drying. These clubs were likely used in the early Indian Reservation period as dance clubs. Provenance: From a Pennsylvania collection and is likely from the Iroquois or Shawnee peoples in origin.
