<B>Eastern Sioux Quilled and Fringed Buffalo Hide Knife Sheath</B></I><BR>Circa 1850<BR>Length 11 3/4 in.<BR><BR>This native tanned buffalo hide case is partially decorated with porcupine quillwork. Floral designs executed in red, white, and blue quills are bordered by alternating rows of plaited quillwork in blue and white and blue and red. Quill wrapped hide fringe decorates the upper and lower edge. The sheath is fitted with a buffalo rawhide liner.<BR><BR>Provenance<BR>Deaccessioned from the Memorial Hall Museum, Deerfield, Massachusetts. This knife case is listed as number 19 in the collection of relics as published by the Pocumtuck Valley Memorial Association in Deerfield (1920). The knife case was collected by Francis Thompson, a local judge and historian from Greenfield, Massachusetts (1833-1916). This lot is accompanied by documents from the museum.<BR><BR>
