Eastern Sioux Pipe Bowl
Eastern Sioux Pipe Bowl and Stem
Circa 1870
Length 28 1/2 in. overall

The ash wood stem has been carved in an even spiral pattern its entire length. An elbow shaped catlinite bowl is fitted to the stem. An open hand is carved in relief on the front of the bowl and a scalloped pattern on the underside.
Spiral carved or "twisted" pipestems were popular in the western Great Lakes (Chippewa, Potawatomi, Menominee, and Winnebago) and extended to both the Eastern Sioux (Dakota) and Western Sioux (Lakota). Contrary to some references and conjecture, the wood stem was not steamed and twisted. Rather, it was patiently worked, the artist taking care not to break into the smoke channel. Fine examples such as this represent the sophisticated product of the carver's art.

Provenance
Brant Mackley, Hummelstown, Pennsylvania.

Important no
