The lot features an unusual and rare fish effigy pipe bowl from the Eastern Sioux Native American Indians dating to circa 1880-1890's. The piece has a nice size with full fish body pattern with the stem connection or mouth piece at the bottom of the tail and the bowl at the fishes mouth. The bowl shows signs of hand drilling and dark coloring from use along with a deep tobacco sent. The piece is carved from pipestone catlinite and has a rich red to speckled pink coloring and shows good condition with no visible major damage with obvious signs of normal use. Provenance: From the renowned Sundog Fine Art Bozeman, Montana collection by Bruce VanLandingham. Bruce VanLandingham was a pillar in the American Indian collecting community and a respected expert. Along with being an avid collector, Bruce was also the sole owner of Sundog Fine Art Gallery in Bozeman, which was both part museum and gallery, this piece is directly from the collection.
