Eastern European broadsword with semi-basket hilt, thumb ring, wide blade with flared point, possibly Polish or Hungarian, circa about 1600-1680. The blade measures 34-1/2", the sword is 41-1/4" overall; the blademeasures 1-1/2" at its widest point and does not taper until 3" from the point. The blade shows traces of light engraving that is not discernable as to the figures, other than a small cross and knights head can be seenwithin the engraving. The wire wrapped grip is very coarse but old, and the pommel nut shows no removal. The sword has been cleaned long ago and is aging back to a natural patina with some light to slightly heavypitting. The blade is nicely tempered. The Poles were the last stop before Muslims overran Europe. Est.: $900-$1,800
