East Cove Boobies - KAI Show, Patrick Ching 2017
This scene is from the Kilauea Point National Wildlife Refuge lighthouse area looking east to the red footed booby colony on Crater Hill and beyond to the Mokolea Peninsula on the Island of Kauai. In the foreground red footed boobies are collecting chenopodium shrubs to use in nest building. There are three species of booby, birds resembling gannets, in Hawaii. The red foots nest in shrubs while the masked and brown boobies are generally ground nesters. The birds in this painting were inspired by photographs taken by Tom and Pat Leeson (large booby) and Gene McGuire (other boobies).
