Early cutlass, probably American, measuring 27-1/2” overall with 22-1/2” flared blade, iron guard, simple turned and carved wood grip with original iron mounted leather scabbard. The blade and hilt show anuncleaned patina with light to slightly heavy erosion and pinprick pitting. The grip is good, the scabbard fair to good with some cracking, missing its tip, losses at the edges, and normal deterioration. The bladeshows an uncommon flare or widening of the blade, approx. 7” from the hilt which extends approx. 3-4” down the blade before narrowing back. The blade measures 2” at the hilt, approx. 2-1/4” at the widest part of theflare. A completely unique style of sword which we would date to the Revolutionary War era and we believe is American but we can find no other example illustrated. Should be interesting to further research.
