Early and Rare Duck Foot Pistol
Flintlock 4 barrel pistol by Peter Haywood of Chester. Haywood worked as a gunmaker in Chester in 1815. This is a high quality smoothbore in approximately .45 caliber, with engraved brass frame, silver inlay in one piece grip and removable 2 3/4” steel barrels with star milled muzzles. This is a scarce piece of firearms curiosa. The duckfoot or duck foot pistol was the original riot gun, meant to fire all 4 barrels at the same time, this pistol was the favorite of the British Navy between 1790 and 1840. The splayed barrels where both effective and frightening. The brass retains great patina with steel evenly darkened, the wood highly grained and rich in color. Markings are all deep and clear and the spring clip is original and intact.
