This is a nice example of an early WWII German 98K low turret sniper rifle as produced by the Mauser factory. The top of the receiver is covered by the front turret base, but is probably marked with "byf" the wartime code for the Mauser factory. The right side receiver ring has the three small Eagle WaA655 Waffenamt proofs and the left side of the receiver ring and rear section of the barrel are marked with only has the single large Eagle firing proof. The receiver side wall is marked "Mod.98". It is fitted with an early production Joseph Schneider and Company, Optische Werkes scope that is marked on the side; "DIALYTAN 4x, 3670/dkl/+". The front receiver ring has the original serial number lined-out and the serial number "44722" hand stamped above that. The rifle is fitted with the early milled barrel bands, trigger guard and floor plate with all four items correctly numbered to match the rifle with the last two also having the small Eagle WaA 655 Waffenamt proofmarks. The stock and handguard are a later laminated versions with smooth buttplate with the take down bolt through the buttstock with a faint "Heers" Waffenamt and acceptance proof on the right side of the buttstock. It has the correct military tangent rear sight and has an inverted "v" front sight.
BBL: 24 inch round
Stock: laminated
Gauge: 7.92 mm Mauser
Finish: blue
Grips:
Serial Number: 2921
Condition: Very good as assembled overall with 30% of the original blue finish still remaining, mostly in the protected areas overall with the exposed metal surfaces showing a light gray patina color. The stock and handguard have both been lightly sanded and varnished with the various acceptance proofs partially visible overall. The scope retains traces of the original blue finish remaining with mostly a novice touch up blue overall. As noted the front scope ring has been renumbered and the rear scope ring on the right side has been rewelded, slightly ground down and now shows a slight crack through the ring. The scope elevation knob correctly raises and lowers the cross-hairs. The screws in the rear scope base have also been replaced and the complete bolt assembly is mismatched. Still the basic rifle is an original low turret sniper rifle.
