Early W. Butcher Sheffield Bowie knife with “Dog Bone” shaped grip, “W” Crown and “R” markings, rare Spanish notch. The knife measures 13-3/4” overall with 8-5/8” clip point blade with long sharpened false edge. Thick stock of approx. 1/4". The blade is etched in early style with panel reading “Arkansas Toothpick”. The blade is in very good to near fine condition with minor aging, slight sharpening, light pitting, and minor discolorations. The etching is hand-done which is correct for this early knife of approx. 1830-1837 era. The etching is approx. 75-85% intact with legend in panel slightly light and barely legible. The hilt is integral cast in dog-bone shape with ebony scales. The crossguard is unusual with plating over brass. The knife also shows double-escutcheons and is in generally very good plus to near fine original condition overall. This early knife was intended for the American market in the “Alamo Era”. Note: Original sheath included in good condition with some scuffs, etc, pictured with lot # 744. Hugh Hayes Collection. Est: $5,000 - $14,000
