Early US Postal Columbus Bilateral & Other Scales
This lot consists of 4 vintage Postal scales ranging from early to mid Twentieth Century. The most unique of which is a Columbus Bilateral scale, originally patented in Germany in 1904 by Philipp Jakob Maul. The scale features a symmetrical design and a decorative metal base containing the text,"Columbus". Engraving on the front of the scale reads, "D.R.P. [Deutsches Reich Patentschrift] / Oestr. Ung. Pat. 25487". The scale's lever is engraved with Maul's "M" logo. The sale is 7 3/4" tall and 5" wide. It has a weighing capacity of 500g. It is believed to have been made in Hamburg Germany in the 1920's The other three scales were manufactured in Chicago by Triner. The first of which also has a patent date of 1904 and is also believed to be from the 1920's. It was patented in the U.S. by James M. Triner. with the design being used into the 1960's. The other two Triner scales are similar counter balance scales believed to be Mid-century.
