Offered in this lot for your consideration is a set of three external frame backpacks used by the United States "Smoke Chasers". These specialty frames custom made to haul back mounted water tanks are believed to originate from mid 20th century, and are constructed of a wooden frame, brass rivets, and army OD green straps. One of the frames still has its original burlap bottom, and is marked "special frame for fire pump". The packs are at home in a burlap sack, marked with the United States Forest Services badge, as well it is marked "Smokechasers" on the bottom of the bag. This set is in relatively good condition for the materials, its intended use, and its age - the sack is stained in multiple spots and the bottom is blown out, each frame is missing different cinch's. Each frame measures approximately 22 1/4" tall, x 16" wide.
