<B>Early Translation of Ojibway Native American Names.</B></I> One page, 7.75” x 4”, undated (circa early 19th century), in ink. A list of Ojibway personal names written by an Ojibway chief with their English translations. The writer, <I>Maunguindous,</B></I> whose name means “A Hero”, has also written four other tribal given names including <I>Awnnwoke</B></I> (Thunder bird who sets in the Clouds), <I>Wanbudick</B></I> (A While Rein Deer), <I>Uhjijauk</B></I> (A Stick), and <I>Noodinokay</B></I> (A Story Creating Thunder Bird). The list has been annotated by someone other than the writer with a note which reads: “<I>The first signature is the name of the writer, a chief of the Ojibway tribe of Indians.</B></I>” The Ojibway tribe was primarily located in the north-east United States and in Canada. The single leaf is mounted to a paper backing sheet. The edges are slightly chipped in areas, with a few small stains, else very good condition. <I>From the collection of Henry E.
