Early Thaddeus Stevens Autograph Letter Signed “Thaddeus Stevens”. One page, 7.75” x 10.5”, Harrisburg Pennsylvania , March 16, 1835, in ink, to E. Chauncey. This letter was written while Thaddeus Stevens (1792-1868), then a member of the Whig Party, served in the Pennsylvania state legislature. Stevens writes this letter of introduction on behalf of “James Tod Esqr of Fayette County” and informs Chauncey “As he is an influential politician as well as a gentleman, any suggestions from you for the mutual benefit of our respective parties & the good of the country will be thankfully rec'd.” Stevens would later go on to greater things in the House of Representatives where he vigorously pursued anti-slavery legislation. Letter has the usual fold creases with some toning to paper, else very good. From the collection of Henry E. Luhrs.

Shipping: Flat Material, Small (view shipping information)
