Early Texas Settler Written Account. This lot features a four-page handwritten letter from a Joseph P. Michie to a man named Ben; it is dated August 1, 1860, from Atascosa, Texas. Written before Atascosa became a town around 1872, Michie, a settler, discusses his situation in Texas to his friend in Otter, Virginia. It reads in part," …getting along as well as expected in as dry a country as this and am…conclud[ing] that Texas is a hard country and a man to live here ought to make money for the privations he has to undergo… I have not seen a good rain since I left Virginia…We have had only two or three slight showers since I arrived in Texas…The oldest Texans say the drought at this time is unprecedented, but I can say for the Texans that they are the veriest liars I have ever met with and where…a man has only to become acclimated to become a liar… " A great lot for those interested in early Texas!

The letter is in very good condition; has several tears on the upper and lower edges of the pages; soiled slightly around the edges; ink is bold and dark. An interesting lot for numerous types of collectors!
