Early Springfield M1903 Bolt Action Rifle, #89354, .30-06 cal., 24'' barrel, parkerized finish, walnut stock, blade front sight and adjustable folding leaf rear sight. Marked on receiver ring ''U.S.SPRINGFIELD ARMORY MODEL 1903'', and on barrel behind front sight ''SA/(flaming bomb)/05''. There is a boxed ''J.F.C.''(J.F. Coyle) cartouche on left side of stock behind the cutoff that appears to have had added carving to the letters at some point. There is a ''P'' firing proof on underside of wrist. Right side of receiver was drilled with two holes for a sight and both are now plugged. This may have been a rod bayonet rifle as the early finger-groove stock has a wood insert in the tip of the forend stamped ''S'', which would have been used to fill the rod channel when it was arsenal converted into its later present configuration. Front sight blade is a U.S.M.C #10 type, with early high handguard. Condition overall is very good with approx. 85% finish remaining on the metal, with finish flaking on the receiver and bolt and thinning and browning to the magazine floorplate and barrel. Wood has a half-inch re-attached chip at the tang, otherwise very good, with an even color to the finish and overall handling marks. Action is smooth, bore is fair with darkening and roughness forward of the chamber and good rifling. Est.: $700-$1,100. (C&R)
