Early Southern Plains Silver Headstall. Early, large and impressive example of a Southern Plains bridle. Plain solid brow plate and attached side plates. Full 2" wide side plates and tip, 3 ½" side conchos, 3” tall tri-lobed front plate. The bit is fully silver mounted on both cheeks, main concho is 2 ?" across; cheek has rocker engraving along the edge. Commercial leather, appears all original. Circa 1870s. Very similar to the 1860s bridle currently on exhibit at the impressive “The Plains Indians: Artists of Earth and Sky” exhibit; and also the 1880s Navajo Bridle pictured on page 112 of “Bridles of the Americas; Vol. 1” by Ned & Jody Martin and Robert Bauver.
