This lot includes an early original hand carved and painted American Cigar Store Indian Chief, originating from the 1940's or 50's. The chief is carved from solid wood, and shows exceptional detail, especially in the face, headdress, and accoutrements. The piece was crafted in the likeness of Samuel Robb, or Julius Theodore Melchers carvings. This particular carving shows the traditional cigar bundle in the Chiefs left hand, and a smoking pipe in his right. Due to language barriers, these carvings would be placed in front of a tobacco outlet, to inform patrons that they could purchase tobacco from that particular establishment. The Chief is in good condition overall, it does display some slight cracking, that is indicative of age. The Chief measures 46 3/8" tall, and approximately 10 3/4" wide, and 12 1/4" deep.
