This is an A.B.C. House clear picnic bottle with a JOHN FERGUSON A.B.C. HOUSE 501 KEARNY ST. S.F. slug. John J. Ferguson started business in San Francisco in 1875 when he opened the Occidental House. Three years later, he opened a bar on California St. called The Sunnyside Saloon. This lasted 8 years until 1885, when he opened the A.B.C. House, which became one of the most successful saloons in the city, lasting for 33 years, only to close down due to Prohibition [Ref: Picnics, Coffins, Shoo-Flies, John L. Thomas, 1974]. This half pint has a neatly applied, single collar, un-ground top, a footed base, and a fancy badge shaped slug. Several small cracks on the reverse, could use a good cleaning. One of the early picnics from "The City." Listed in Thomas, not in Wilson. - Feisel Collection -59225
