Early Railroads. Two manuscript letters
Early Railroads. Two manuscript letters, 1850-60: 1) To Philadelphia & Reading Railroad, regarding 77 shares received. Attractive integral address-leaf. Letter from J.P. Kennedy, Bombay, consulting engineer for India railroads, commenting on the type of fuel used in locomotives in India, and where double tracks are used. Mounting traces on verso, some staining, but ink dark and legible. 2) Two documents, 1857, introductions for Alexander L. Holley, each with large red seal, one signed by John P. Jackson, Pres. of American Association for Improvement of Railway Machinery, the other signed by H. Meigs of American Institute of New York City, stating that Holley was a member. Holley, called "the father of modern American steel," introduced the Bessemer steelmaking process to the U.S. Holley took these two introductions with him to Europe to study railroads, in order to improve railroad practices in America. Mounting evidence on verso, some fading at margins. Historically significant.
