Manufactured in 1887 the second year of production. The top barrel flat is marked with the two line address ahead of the rear sight and "40-82 W.C.F." at the breech. The upper tang is marked "MODEL 1886" and the two patent dates and serial number are on the lower tang. Dovetailed blade front and adjustable rear sporting sights. Blue barrel and magazine tube, with casehardened remaining parts and mounted with a smooth walnut forearm and straight grip stock with a steel crescent buttplate. The accompanying Winchester letter verifies the rifle configuration, 40-82 caliber, octagon barrel, plain trigger and that it was received in the warehouse on September 1, 1887 and shipped out the next day.

Good. The barrel and magazine tube have a smooth mottled brownish patina and the remaining parts have a gray patina, darker on the lever. The magazine tube has some tool marks present forward of forend cap. There is a small amount of minor pitting on the loading gate and some moderate pitting on the upper tang. The wood has been revarnished some time ago and remains good with most of the varnish remaining and showing a 1 inch splinter absent from the front upper left side of the wrist and chip on the opposite side. Overall there are a few minor dings and handling marks. The markings are clear. The action is fine.
