Manufactured circa 1872-1873, this was one of approximately only 7,000 Model 1871-1872 open top revolvers manufactured. The Model 1871-1872 was the first non-conversion Colt cartridge revolver, and was a direct predecessor of the hugely successful Colt Single Action Army Revolver. The top of the barrel is marked "-- ADDRESS COL. SAML COLT NEW - YORK U.S. AMERICA --", the left side of the frame is marked "COLTS/PATENT", the cylinder is roll engraved with the Texas naval scene and "COLTS PATENT No "345". The matching serial number is marked on the barrel, frame, trigger guard and back strap. The loading gate, cylinder and cylinder pin are numbered "26", and the wedge is un-numbered. Fitted with a one piece smooth ivory grip.

Good as refinished overall. The metal surfaces have a smooth mottled gray patina with finish remaining over minor pitting. The brass has a very pleasant aged patina. The cylinder scene is extremely light due to buffing. The remaining markings are clear. The grip is fine showing some shrinkage, small chips around the edges, some minor age cracking and an attractive grain with a pleasant caramel color. The action is excellent.
