This Inscribed Winchester 1866 Model Carbine was manufactured in 1867. The carbine has the characteristic, Second Model single screw upper tang receiver that flares at the junction with the forearm and 'concealed' serial number on the left side of the lower tang. The top of the barrel is roll-stamped with the desirable early legend: "HENRY'S-PATENT-OCT.16.1860/KING'S-PATENT-MARCH 29.1866" in two lines between the barrel band and the rear sight. The serial number, "16553" is stamped on the lower left side of the receiver tang, in the upper tang inlet of the stock and on the inside of the buttplate. All of the visible serial numbers match. The left side of the tang is also stamped "C", "V" and "W". "W.H. Field" is engraved in Old English letters on the left side of the receiver. The carbine has the combination barrel band/ front sight and early style, two-position, rear sight. A saddle ring is mounted on the left side of the receiver. Sling swivels are mounted on the lower barrel band and butt. The carbine has a blued barrel, magazine and barrel bands. The hammer and lever have a case-hardened finish. The walnut stock and forearm have a varnish finish. The carbine is complete with the original, three-piece, jointed steel cleaning rod with brass tip.

Condition: The carbine is in very fine, partially restored original condition. The barrel retains almost 95% of the original blue finish. There are two small spots of pitting on the barrel between the upper barrel band and the muzzle. The upper band has some light pitting on the high points and the lower band has a blue-gray patina with some light age spotting. The barrel markings are sharp. The brass receiver and buttplate are both in very fine condition with exception of a repair to the upper tang which has been reattached. The brass has a deep and very attractive age patina. The receiver and buttplate surfaces are smooth and free from nicks and scratches. The inscription of the left side of the receiver is crisp and well executed. The stock and forearm are both revarnished and retain 90% of the period varnish finish; wear is limited to light handling marks.
