Early Production Colt Single Action Army Revolver with Factory Letter
Colt Single Action Army Revolver manufactured in 1875. This early production commercial Colt Single Action Revolver has the standard blue and casehardened finish with one-piece walnut grip. The revolver has the early features that include: (1) 'bull's-eye' ejector rod head, (2) ejector housing with barrel boss, (3) cylinder with small stops and (4) hammer with elongated knurling on the spur. The barrel has the early, one-line, "script" address: "+ COLT'S PT. F. A. MFG. Co. HARTFORD, CT. U.S.A.+". The left side of the frame is roll-stamped: "PAT. SEPT.19.1871/PAT.JULY.2.1872". "45 CAL" is stamped on the left shoulder of the trigger guard. The loading gate is stamped with the assembly number "2488". The full serial number, "20114" is stamped on the frame, trigger guard and backstrap. The partial serial number, "0114" is stamped on the barrel and the side of the cylinder. All of the visible serial numbers match. The accompanying factory letter verifies the serial number, 45 caliber, blue finish with grips and barrel as "Not Listed" and that it was shipped in an order of 107 revolvers to J.P. Moore & Sons, New York, N.Y. on September 23, 1875. The letter does note that a 7 1/2" barrel and walnut grips were standard at the time.

Good. The revolver has been cleaned many years ago and has an attractive gray patina with scattered age discoloration. There is light firing pitting on the forward edge of the cylinder and adjacent portions of the frame. The barrel and frame markings and the serial numbers are sharp. The grips show heavy wear and are rounded from handling with old worn chips at the butt. The action is tight and still functions well. This is a solid example of an early commercial production Colt Single Action Army Revolver that was carried and used but remains a solid example and original example of a 1875 production Single Action Army.
