This is a refinished example of a very early Model 1896 "Cone Hammer" Mauser Pistol that carries the early style British proofs. The British proofs are from the London proof house and are marked on the left side of the barrel and barrel extension area and consist of a single small "NP" Nitro proof, over a "Crown GP" proof, over a "Crown V" final view proof. Farther back on the barrel extension it has the small roll marking of "NOT ENGLISH MAKE". The top of the chamber area has the "WAFFENFABRIK/MAUSER/OBERNDORF/N" in three lines, along with the standard early Mauser factory proofs that consist of the small Oberndorf antlered proof on the right side of the barrel extension and the standard "Crown/U" on the left side. The pistol has a rust blue finish with bright bolt, casehardened cone hammer and lock frame and niter blue small parts. These early cone hammer pistols are very desirable in that they have all the early features that were later changed as production short cuts, such as the short chamber area, the long extractor, the later transition style deep milled panel frame, (with the different style on the left side vs. right side) the wide trigger, early style firing pin that is retained in a dovetailed block and the 23 groove walnut grip panels. The tangent rear sight has the special range markings that are marked as 1-10 in large numbers indicating 100-1000 yards found on Model 1896 pistols manufactured for the British trade. The serial number, "2838" is stamped on the back strap below the lock frame, on the back side of the hammer, the firing pin block and on the inside of both grip panels. The shoulder stock/holster is a later 1930 commercial style with the large Mauser Banner on the left side in front of the hinge and is complete with an unnumbered attaching iron.
BBL: 5 1/2 inch round
Stock: walnut
Gauge: 7.63 mm Mauser
Finish: blue
Grips: walnut
Serial Number: 2838
Condition: Fine, with most of a British retailer style period refinish as it has that dull British blued look typical of what you might find in the 1930s, that still retains the clear sharp markings overall with nice square sharp edges on all the flats of the metal surfaces. The grip panels are very good plus, with a nice dark brown color overall with some minor handling marks on both sides but no cracks or damage. directly in the middle underside of the barrel on the left side there is a small old pitted area under the blued finish. The stock has been cleaned and lightly sanded overall, with one small crack below the hinge and the unmarked attaching iron still retains 90% of it's original fading blue finish overall.
